The PLAY-DOH brand is proud to celebrate over 50 years of colorful, creative play. Since it was first introduced in 1956, PLAY-DOH modeling compound has become a classic and beloved toy, used in homes and schools around the world by children of all ages.

The PLAY-DOH brand is now over 50 years young -- and as creative and colorful as ever! Learn about other PLAY-DOH compound milestones below.
1956: PLAY-DOH Brand modeling compound, a non-toxic reusable modeling compound developed by Rainbow Crafts in Cincinnati, is demonstrated and sold in the toy department of Woodward & Lothrop Department Store in Washington, D.C. PLAY-DOH compound is available only in one color and size, an off-white, 1.5-pound can. One year earlier, it was introduced to schools, kindergartens and nursery schools.
1957: Three new colors join the PLAY-DOH line - yellow, red and blue - and the three-can pack is introduced. Early TV advertising features Miss Frances on Ding Dong School and Captain Kangaroo.
1958: PLAY-DOH compound 4-pack, including red, yellow, blue and white compounds debuts at American Toy Fair.
1960: The new FUN FACTORY playset expands the line. The PLAY-DOH compound logo featuring the PLAY-DOH Pete image is created.
1960: New PLAY-DOH compound two-ounce "mini-cans" are introduced.
1964: PLAY-DOH compound goes international with distribution in England, France and Italy.
1970: The PLAY-DOH Pete TV commercial, featuring the image on all PLAY-DOH compound packaging, is voted into the top 100 best commercials by Advertising Age.
1971: Kenner Products merges with Rainbow Crafts, and PLAY-DOH compound becomes part of the Kenner line.
1972: PLAY-DOH compound records production of the 500,000,000th can.
1983: PLAY-DOH compound introduces the new Rainbow 8-pack - four bright new colors combined with the original four.
1986: PLAY-DOH compound, packaged in a cardboard container for 30 years, is now packaged in a tightly-sealed, easy-to-open plastic container for longer life.
1991: PLAY-DOH compound joins Hasbro, Inc. as part of the Playskool line, when Hasbro purchased the Tonka Corporation and its Kenner and Parker Brothers divisions.
1996: PLAY-DOH compound celebrates its 40th birthday and introduces two colors, gold and silver. Among other new items in the line, the PLAY-DOH brand goes hi-tech with the introduction of a new CD-ROM game, PLAY-DOH CREATIONS, an educational software program for children.
1997: The PLAY-DOH FUZZY PUMPER BARBER & BEAUTY SHOP playset, featuring a play figure whose "hair" can be extruded and then styled, is re-introduced. The first version of this playset appeared in 1977.
2000:The PLAY-DOH Colorful Campaign collects more than 100,000 votes to determine the country's favorite PLAY-DOH compound colors. Rose Red, Purple Paradise, Blue Lagoon and Garden Green win as favorites.
2003: The PLAY-DOH CREATIVITY TABLE product is introduced. As an all-in-one play station, this huge workspace provides a place for lots of creative play with markers, crayons and, of course, PLAY-DOH!
2006: PLAY-DOH compound turns 50 years young. To mark the milestone, Hasbro fittingly introduces the PLAY-DOH BIRTHDAY BUCKET and the PLAY-DOH 50 PACK of colors that includes six new super pastel colors. In addition, the popular PLAY-DOH FUZZY PUMPER BARBER & BEAUTY SHOP playset returns as the FUZZY
