Back-to-School Lessons in Fun

After-school Cloodle cookies
Start by making sugar cookies (or you can buy them ready-made). Divide a container of white frosting into several small bowls and tint with food coloring.
Now, get your Cadoo game, pull out the Cloodle cards, and have kids "draw" the secret clues on the cookies using the tinted frosting. (Hint: Spoon some frosting into a plastic baggie and snip off a lower corner to make an easy-to-use pastry bag. Kids can draw on the cookies by gently squeezing the frosting through the hole.)

If you want to get the whole family involved, take turns drawing and guessing -- and of course eating!

School word find
Think of a list of words that remind you of school, like chalk, apple, crayon, desk, teacher, and bus. Then print our Make Your Own Word Find template and write the words in the grid straight across, diagonally, backward - however you want! Fill the empty boxes with random letters and swap with a friend or family member for lots of word-finding fun.

Lunchbox surprise
Sweeten school lunches with hidden treasures. Sneak in a silly drawing, a cut-out star that lists ways your child shines, a fun sticker, or even an invitation to play a Cranium game with the family after school.

Desk decor
Create a one-of-kind desktop pencil holder. Cut the top off a small milk carton, juice box, or frozen juice container. Then clean and dry it.

Have kids decorate it by gluing on pictures of their favorite things from magazines, coloring books, and newspapers. They can even personalize their pencil holder by cutting out and gluing on words to describe themselves!

Shine Showplace
Decorate a poster board, write "I Shine!" at the top, and glue clothes pins to the front. Throughout the school year, attach school papers and artwork to the poster to recognize special accomplishments.

Don't have space to display a poster? Hang string, fishing line, or dental floss across an out-of-the-way corner and attach papers and artwork with paper clips or clothes pins.

Back-to-school silly story
Create your own story about a wacky first day of school. Your answers make it silly and fun! Try it again with a friend to see how the story changes.
