Craniacs are always inventing new ways to play our games -- and we love hearing about it! Check out the latest Craniac game twists for Cadoo, Cariboo, Cranium, The Family Fun Game, Hullabaloo, Whoonu, and Zigity.
Cadoo"We just bought the Cadoo game and love it. Since the game can go very quickly when you play with just two people, we decided not to use the board. We set a score and take turns playing as usual. Instead of putting a piece on the board, we give a point to the person." From the Stergius family "To change things up a bit, we draw two or three Cariboo cards at a time. Then we try to find something that matches (say, blue, square, or 3). If someone comes up with an impossible match, they can get rid of one card or replace one - their choice. I'm playing with a 3-year-old, so it has been fun to see it click in her head that she can compare what's left on the board to the cards showing to try and figure out what might improve her chances of making a match. It is a pretty fluid set of rules. There's only one child involved, so it's pretty easy to make it up as we go." From the Richard family "I've found ways to play Cranium with two or three people, so even if you can't find enough people for teams, you can still have fun. For a two-person game, just have the other person read your red and yellow cards to you, and for the blue and green cards, have them guess while you play. For your last question of the game, it can't be a blue or green card because it would be too easy. For three-person games it is very similar. The person to your left reads your red and yellow cards, and you play your green and blue cards while other players guess. Same rule applies to the last question." From the Ahearn family in Boston "We got The Family Fun Game for a big family reunion we were planning, but in the time prior to the reunion, we only had three people to play: me, my mom, and my son. Since it requires two teams to play, we divided my mom and me onto separate teams and put my son on both teams. First he'd be my partner, then he'd be Grandma's partner. It was a blast, and he got to play all the time!" From the Stopple family "When we play Hullabaloo, we take turns being the caller instead of using the recorded voice. The caller must close their eyes or turn their backs to the players, so you can't see who is where. Then you can call out just about anything. One time a friend of my daughter said, 'Put your face on a green and your pinkie on a purple.' Just too funny!" From the Rutan family "When my husband was deployed and my daughter wanted to play Whoonu, we used a stuffed animal to be the third player. Without looking, we would randomly pick the stuffed animal's cards to place by the tokens or to put in the envelope. Sometimes it actually won a round!" From the McCleerey family "My whole family loves to play Zigity, but we have a little twist. Because the cards are made of plastic, we found out (by accident) that they stick to your forehead. So . At the beginning of every game we have to put a card on our forehead, and no one can tell us what it is. The game is played like normal, with the exception that when you run out of cards, you have to be able to guess the suit of the card on your head. If you've been watching people's eyes during the game, you have a pretty good idea what's up there, but if not, you have to take a random guess. If you guess wrong, you have to draw three cards. If you guess right though, you win! I'll be the first to admit that you look a little dorky during game play, and we don't do this version with casual acquaintances, but it really encourages communication and an additional level of thought while playing." |
