Celebrating your family's shining moments can be a lot of fun. This week, why not take a little time to recognize everybody's hard work, sense of humor, and individual contributions -- the things that make your family unique.
Here at Cranium Central, whenever we want to honor a recent accomplishment, the whole company gathers, we ring our "Cranium gong," and everybody joins in the celebration. Why not try this at home? If you don't have a gong, you can ring a bell or whack the bottom of a frying pan with a wooden spoon -- anything to call everyone to order. Did somebody ace a big test? Bang the gong to introduce them and have them say a few words about how they did it and how they feel. Then let them have a turn banging the gong. You can schedule your gong to make it more "official" or it can be impromptu. Did you just finish a particularly good dinner? Go bang the family gong and give a shout-out to the chef!
Staging an award ceremony is another great way to have fun, celebrate each other, and give every member of your family the chance to shine. Awards can be as wacky or sincere as you like. Celebrate everybody's unique qualities with awards that honor their personalities or recognize the hard work and dedication they're putting into school, work, or having fun around the house. You can add music to underscore the proceedings and even create pretend nominees before announcing the winner of each category. It's a great way to commemorate the end of the school year or any other major events in the family. You could even create certificates for the award winners. Here are just a few award ideas to get you started:
Wacky awards: Loudest Laugher, Biggest Feet, Messiest Bed-Head, Best Impersonation of an Inanimate Object, Singer of Goofiest Songs
Merit awards: Most Vegetables Eaten, Homework Speed Record, Most Days at School/Work Without Missing a Day, Best Vacuumer, Most Dedicated Dog Walker
Designate an area of the house -- a hallway, a door, the fridge -- as the Family Hall of Fame. Do you have a kid who always cleans his room without you having to ask? Add his photo to the Hall of Fame under the heading Cleanest Room. Did somebody bring her grades up from last semester? Add her photo under Biggest Improvement in School. Don't forget to add the year of each accomplishment. As always, categories can be as funny or sincere as your family wants to make them. You can award Hall of Fame honors for anything from Best Cartwheels to Most Books Read.
