CANDY LAND GAME CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF DELICIOUS ADVENTURES
Hasbro Marks Birthday with CANDY LAND: Sweet Celebration Game Featuring New Characters and a New, Customized Way to Play

East Longmeadow, Mass. (February 13, 2009) – For the past 60 years, King Kandy and the delightfully sweet characters of CANDY LAND have been entertaining children in the delicious adventure game that takes players through Lollipop Woods, the Chocolate Swamp and Peppermint Forest. This year, Hasbro introduces CANDY LAND: Sweet Celebration Game for players of all ages to enjoy,

“CANDY LAND is often a child’s first board game,” said LaJoy Suber Frederick, Global Brand Director for Hasbro’s Preschool Games. “For sixty years, children have shared in this classic game that inspires lighthearted fun and imaginative play. To celebrate this timeless tradition, we are introducing a sixtieth birthday edition that welcomes two new lovable characters to the world of CANDY LAND and brings the adventure to life through a dynamic three-dimensional game board.”

In Fall 2009, children become the game designers as they create their own path to King Kandy’s castle in CANDY LAND: Sweet Celebration Game. For the first time, individual path pieces are linked together to make up the freestanding game board, allowing players to shorten or lengthen the game depending on the time allotted. This updated CANDY LAND game adds more fun, promotes imagination and creativity, and enhances the fantasy of the enchanting world of CANDY LAND.

CANDY LAND: Sweet Celebration Game invites players to a party at King Kandy’s castle. Before arriving, players must first build their path and then gather treats to bring to the birthday celebration. Treats can be found at four “Sweet Spots,” which are built in 3-D locations that are connected to the jeweled pathways. Travel to two new destinations in CANDY LAND – Captain Kidd Cone’s Ship, the SS Neapolitan, and the Chunky Chocolate Mountains – to find ice cream cones and chocolate treats galore. Lift up the picnic tablecloth at Lolly’s Lollipop Park to find lollipops. At Princess Frostine’s Snowflake Lake, collect frozen gingerbread cookies. But, watch out for Lord Licorice who will try to block your path and ruin the celebration. Be the first to reach the celebration with your treats and you will become the guest of honor at the party!

As Hasbro honors the CANDY LAND Game’s sixtieth birthday, it’s important to recognize how the game originated. A woman named Eleanor Abbott, who was recovering from polio, created the CANDY LAND Game as a lighthearted activity to entertain children affected by the disease. In 1949, Ms. Abbott sold the game to Milton Bradley, who marketed the game for $1.00 with the slogan, “a sweet little game … for sweet little folks.”  Since the game’s introduction on store shelves, the distinctive red-and-white peppermint name has been printed on more than 40 million CANDY LAND games.

CANDY LAND: Sweet Celebration Game will be available in Fall 2009 at mass merchandise retailers for an approximate retail price of $19.99. Appropriate for two to four players, the game is suggested for children ages four and up.
