Waste Reduction and Recycling

We are committed to waste minimization at all levels of our organization and strive to further increase our recycling percentage. In 2007, 88% of the total waste produced within Hasbro operated manufacturing, distribution, and office facilities worldwide was recycled. This represented more than 14,000 tons of waste paper, cardboard, plastics, wood, metal, batteries, lamps/ballasts, electronic equipment, etc.

Waste RecyclingHasbro has been an active member of the U.S. EPA WasteWise Program since 1994. WasteWise is a voluntary U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program through which organizations eliminate municipal solid waste and certain other industrial wastes. Municipal solid waste includes materials that could end up in an organization's (or its customers') trash, and includes corrugated cardboard, paper, packaging, and wood pallets. Industrial wastes include non-hazardous batteries, oil filters, and non-hazardous ink.

In our U.S. games manufacturing, waste minimization initiatives have reduced waste generation by 90% over the last 5 years. We have done this by using 100% pre/post-consumer content chipboard in 100% of our games. We also recycle and reuse plastic in our molding operation. In 2007, approximately 700,000 pounds of plastics were recycled in our East Longmeadow, Massachusetts facility’s molding operation. Waste injection molding runners are automatically reground and reused at the molding machines and we continuously look for opportunities to further reduce unnecessary waste and scrap. In our Waterford, Ireland facility, we reduced overall waste by 98% from 1998 – 2007.

Our U.S. games manufacturing facility has partnered with International Paper Products (IPP) in a new and innovative scrap waste program. IPP is a manufacturer of a highly renewable fuel product called Enviro-Fuelcubes which are a pre-engineered, biomass solid fuel product used in commercial power plants for manufacturing electricity. Enviro-Fuelcubes reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and burn more cleanly than coal, oil, or wood.

Waste Reduction in Packaging

Hasbro has also made significant progress reducing packaging related waste. Examples of this progress include:

  • reducing the amount of adhesive taping on master cartons (used to ship our product)
  • reducing the actual size of master cartons.
  • specifying, where feasible, single-wall master carton construction, instead of double-walled construction.
  • reducing the use of secondary packout tissue paper material.
  • reducing window packaging (Polyvinyl chloride) by changing to open and/or “try me” construction.
  • increasing the percentage of recycled material and post-consumer waste in action figure cards.
  • specifying 100% recycled material in medium-grade paper.
  • specifying a minimum 98% post-consumer recycled content in Kraft grade paper.
  • developing an internal PDQ approval process that reduced unnecessary merchandising packout trays.
  • eliminated wire ties in several high volume product lines.
